Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The common question customers ask when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: will I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and different types available, it can be difficult for the buyer to pick between the two technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors have far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article explains why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up a similar grade of image quality.

Think of a set of blinds in your household on your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. And that is exactly how an LCD projector functions. Each pixel operates like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as pros like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector turns on to when the image reaches your screen is absolutely important to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors project white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to create the projector image. Something important to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your projector screen all at once. The way a DLP projector operates is vastly different and even the way an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of forming an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then pull together each coloured element of the image into a complete image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver high brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, and so resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have placed a white segment in the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this also lessens colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be better quality. For those who are uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is able to produce. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications when compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At one glance, this can seem to be a plus, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is used. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you want to view includes moving images, DLP projection technology can also create image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this downside because all colours are processed with the others. DLP designers have formed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up issue, but the price tag of these projectors make them impractical for many businesses and consumers.

Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and recall how the various colours of light refract different amounts when shone through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light in different ways. Most of the time with a DLP projector, a superfluous yellow colour will show above and some extra blue will show below an image of something as simple as a lone black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be fixed to reduce these effects on the projected image, as each colour is refracted on separate LCD panels.

The isolated veritable benefit (excluding price) with taking a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant to portability and has to be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch found dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht had been a pleasure craft used initially by royalty and later by the burghers on the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, borne from private games. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), ordered for additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 punt. Yachting was found to be classy for the rich and royalty, but after that point the fashion did not last.

The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, and had great naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after merging with other organisations, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some organized fashion on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to the throne in 1820, it came to be named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the perpetual location of British yacht racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the ascension of George IV. Every member was required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for high bids were held, and the club life was lovely. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English had control. Sailing was for the most part for fun and found its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and set a benchmark of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht society, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts took the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the later half of the 19th century. The craft of large yachts was initially greatly affected by the win of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a group started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and built in today’s sense, with only a model for an outline. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the use of the science of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what science had already done for hulls.

Because almost all sailboats had to be individually built, there came a desire for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were designed. Therefore, a rating rule was created, which resulted in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and revised in 1919. In modern times, one of the rapidly blossoming areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to standard dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing those boats can be done on an even keel with no handicapping necessary. A great example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

So long as yachting belonged largely for the nobility and the affluent, expense was no object, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The rise and desire of smaller yachts came in the later half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the value of small boats. Later in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure yachts became more popular, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, during which steam was set to emulate sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly favoured in leisure boats. Bigger power yachts were furthered to a high degree, and long-distance sailing was a favoured occupation of the rich. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then gave way to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. Like naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for many years. By the second half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were exclusively power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the construction of bigger steam yachts. In particular among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service in World War II.

As larger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were created, many bigger yachts began using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, advanced in World War I. During the decade following that, big power-yacht building blossomed, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that point the biggest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of bigger power craft declined from 1932, and the fashion thereafter was toward smaller, less pricey craft. From World War II, a lot of small naval vessels were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting is a globally popular activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally sailing and keeping their own small recreational yachts. The amount of yachts and owners has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas along the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are distinguished by the effect they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that applies the same relative burden on every taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income grow in the same levels. A progressive tax is recognisable by a higher than proportional growth in the tax onus in regard to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional increase in the related burden. Therefore, progressive taxes are regarded as reducing inequalities in income distribution, but regressive taxes are believed to have the effect of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are normally regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, may become less so for the upper-income categories—especially if a taxpayer is able to reduce his tax base by nominating deductions or by leaving out certain income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates that are applied to lower-income demographics will also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are declared.

Income measured over the course of a given period might not necessarily provide the most suitable measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory increases in income could be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might opt to pay for consumption by reducing savings. Ergo, if taxation is regarded alongside “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than when held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of luxuries) are generally regressive, because the dissemination of one’s income consumed or spent for a specific good declines as the amount of personal income rises. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), calculated as a flat amount per capita, clearly are regressive.

It is hard to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of a lack of certainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden is dependant fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In assessing the economic effects of taxation, it is relevant to differentiate between various ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are those dictated in legislation; often these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income taken by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. So, if tax onus increases by 45 cents when income rises by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income grows. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates are required to consider provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) falls by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than indicated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for assessing incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to understand the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, since it may be dependant on factors such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates signify the fraction of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates generally increase with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and also because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households could dampen these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that decrease as income increases.
